How did my keyboard mapping get messed up? Cap letters appear even though caps lock is off.?

Holding down shift makes a lower case letter. I cannot make a period or a comma–it just appears as > or <. It seems to have started soon after installing google toolbar or desktop.
At same time, I think, System Restore refused to work. I can launch it, but it is unresponsive when I try to click next to pick a restore point or even cancel. I close by clicking the red x.

It is a laptop keyboard.

Well, I may be stating the obvious, but Google Toolbar seems like the culprit here. Try doing a system restore to a point before you had the toolbar. If that doesn’t work, then I am not too sure. Do other keyboard work on this computer (or does this keyboard work on other computers?) Doing this test will prove whether the actual keyboard is damaged.
