Cored Welding Wire

I need to braze a cable stop on my bike frame. I need help. What tips can you give me?

I need to braze on a cable stop for my brakes on my bike frame. I have the mounts but not the cable guide/stop. I have a little knowledge but i want to be sure before i do this. First of all, I have a soldering iron that can reach 900*F, i have a spool of solder wire that has a rosin Flux Core. Would this be sufficient for a cable stop on a bike? I tried using a cold-weld compond first and it snapped when tension was on the cable. Would a soldered joint using the soldering iron and solder wire snap like the compund did? Do i need to braze the joint with like a copper wire and torch instead? Any opinions? Thanks a lot.

No….braze it on or have it welded. The solder will fail eventually even if it holds for a little while….brazing will last if you do it properly. You can pick up a small propane torch for $30-$60 and buy a can of MAPP gas for it. Use a flux brazing rod….anything will work ok so don’t spend time looking for any particular rod (assuming you have a steel frame here…..if we’re talking aluminum it needs to be Tig welded). Don’t try one of those mini crack-torch types, get a normal plumbing/home-owner type of torch. You’ll have to do all of your metal prep work and repaint the frame of course (or just that section of you want to change the color scheme to something different). If you’re going to be close to any other joints or fittings, rigging up a heat sink of some sort is desireable but not critical.
