How can I clean motor oil off leather?

I just bought a pony harness at an auction sale. Apparently, someone decided to dip the collar in old oil to make it look blacker or something. There’s a pretty thick layer over the entire collar, enough so it gets all over your hands and clothes when you pick it up. It smells pretty oily too. What’s the best way to get the oil off the thick, heavy duty harness leather?

You may want to use a dish washing detergent with a degrease. Put the dishing washing liquid on a damp cloth, gently rub it over the harness, rinse with a clean damp cloth and most if not all of the oil will come off.

After this, clean thoroughly with Saddle Soap and you should have an oil free collar.
