How long back can u find ancestors online?

Using ancestry, i can only go back to about 1820. Is this about the stopping point for these sorts of records or is there another site that would show results farther back?

That’s how far I got back too. There might be census records that go back further, and you’d be more likely to find them in the actual town hall than online.
Lots of people came over to America around that time, which becomes even more problematic. You could try the records offices in the countries from which your ancestor came. Sometimes it’s in a foreign language, but you can often contact the records office and explain the situation. The first US Census was in 1790
Do you have ancestry.com? It’s been very helpful for me. The Ellis Island website is also great.
