Building a bike and welding?

Before you start to invest in machines I suggest you do a bit of research on the particulars of building a bike frame. It isn’t as easy as buying tubing (not bars) and a welder and joining them together. You need to understand how to machine the tubes and other parts, how to maintain proper alignment, and how to control the heat.

If you want to learn how to weld I suggest finding a school that offers classes- there are a LOT of them- or calling a weld shop and ask to watch them for a day.

For welding aluminum and successfully making a bike frame you’ll need a TiG welder and facilities to anneal and heat treat the frame. This is an exact science and it is expensive. You can use a TiG welder for steel as well and you won’t need the equipment for heat treating but you do have to have skills.
