How do we get rid of the stumps of Russian Olive trees?

These were well established trees that we cut down and left about a foot of trunk two years ago. We cut holes in the stumps and tried several kinds of products to kill the roots. It hasn’t helpled because we see new growth on top of the trunk now. Has anyone got a serious solution to the problem? We can’t burn them because they are near our large propane tank.

Here’s a somewhat easy solution to your problem….

Purchase a product that contains the active ingredient called; “Triclopyr”…. which is found in “Brush-B-Gone” or “Brush Killer”….both are sold at most hardware stores. Triclopyr is better at eradicating large trees and shrubs than other herbicides. It can also be used to control your broadleaved weeds found on lawns and also to control poison oak/ivy.

Use a 25% solution (1 part Triclopyr + 3 parts water) and then apply this with an old paint brush over the freshly-cut surface of the olive tree.

OR

You can drill large new holes at 45-degee angles downward around the entire stump and fill the holes up with this solution. Once applied, the Triclopyr will be translocated down to the roots (in the same manner as Roundup) and die. Your stump will gradually decay over time.

Note: If you cut the top portion of the stump, you’ll need to apply the solution within 10 minutes or else the stump will exude a fluid that begins healing/protecting itself.
