If you test two samples and find that both produce a red flame….?

how can you determine for sure whether they contain the same metal?

and

If you tested a sample and the color changed from green to orange how might you explain what happened?

You could look at both samples through a diffraction grating. This will allow you to distinguish between separate lines in the spectrum. Perhaps both have a strong red line, but one has a weaker green line – this would indicate that they are different metals.

In the second case, it is likely that all of the compound burned off (was vaporized). The yellow color could result from traces of sodium on the testing wire or the formation of carbon particles in the flame (the presence of the wire will cool that part of the flame and also provide a surface for soot to form on).
