How do I stop retaining water?

Yesterday I had a terrible stomachache due to eating something bad. My friend told me to drink salt water (4 tbs of salt in a cup with warm water), which made me feel much worse than before. Today my whole body is swollen because I’m retaining water. How do I stop it retaining all the water I am drinking? For how long am I going to be like this?

First you should (if you haven’t already figured it out) stop taking in salt You should also stop taking in excessive carbohydrates, these will make you bloat as well.

Eat mostly lean protein, drink plenty of water, and put lemon in your water as this is a natural diuretic! Caffeine is a diuretic as well. However, if you will be using the “diuretic” methods above, you should make sure to drink plenty of water, because you will get dehydrated!

I know it sounds silly, drink water to lose water, but if your body doesn’t feel that it is hydrated, it will hold onto every bit of fluid it gets- including from your foods. You will likely be like this for a couple of days until your sodium-water balance is back in check.

Scientifically speaking, water always follows sodium, so as long as you take in sodium you will retain water. Keep drinking plenty of water until your kidneys filter out that sodium! Again, could be a couple of days or so…
