i am wiring a lincoln Electric Welder?
the welder is a Single Phase 230 volt 50 amp. The problem is its really old and i am under the impression that in those days things were wired different. the plug is only a three pron plug the device is also made for a three prong plug. Now the wires i have coming out of the wall are a red,a black and a hot plus the neutral ,but lick i said i on;y have a three prong plug and device. in the panel the red and the black are hooked up to the to the breaker the neutral and hot are on the neutral bar.So what do i do i am en electrican but only 3 years experince and i still need guidence thank you
you should know this.im no electrician,though ive done quite a bit of it.your welder chasis is grounded through i believe the neutral, so black to black,red to red,and i think green to neutral.if you like, you can install a newer chord to the welder that grounds the chasis seperate.also that is not a hot, the red and black are circuit interuptions of your 220 circuit.see with ac it flows both ways and changes polarity at around twice per second at 60 hrtz.what you should have is a green neutral, and then youll have an equipment ground.the neutral and ground do go to the grounded lug in the breaker box.man i feel sorry for you if you had to hook up my 220 korean wirefeed.now thats different lmao.
