Weight Welding
How much will a square steel tube bend, under its own weight?
Quick and probably easy question for a structural engineer. A 6′ long Stainless Steel square tube. 2″ x 2″. Wall thickness is .083″. Weight is 2.164 lbs/ft.
If I support this at both ends by welding it between two solid posts… how much will it deflect, under only it’s own weight?

While it will of course deflect under it’s own weight, for a 2″ x 2″ tube, 6 ft long weighing about 13lb, the deflection would be difficult to measure, and there will likely be more distortion resulting from the welding than the deflection from the tubes own weight. In fact, due to the welding, it wouldn’t surprise me any to see a negative (upwards) deflection.
