Is it possible to make a magnet using a welder?

I think it might be possible to make a magnet using an ordinary Electric Welder, although I don’t know if a would need to be an A/C or D/C welder. It seems like I’ve heard this before. yes you will have to use DC and wind a insulated wire around a steel rod you may over heat the welder if you energize it for more than a short time
