What are the easiest to use Mig Welders w/gas?
I have an old Clarke 100en I’ve been learning with, but I want something more versatile. I have the provisions for 220v, but I’m not sure a bigger welder will be harder for welding thin sheetmetal. I’m looking to spend less than $1000 (preferably around $500), and I’m OK with buying used equipment. I also want something that I can get spare parts for easily. The Clarke model I have seems to be popular in England, but not here in the U.S.
Try a Miller Millermatic 180
I used one before at a shop I worked at and it works the same as a millermatic 252 or 350p(except it is lighter duty cycle and doesn’t have the voltage to weld materials thicker than 3/8′ effectively)
The millermatic 180 is a great little welder, you can probably pick one up for $800 from the right supplier. They run great, and lay very nice beads but are only rated to 5/16” material, but maxed out you could weld 3/8” for sure. You would have no problem welding sheet with it, and honestly 220v or even three phase 460v doesnt increase your chance to burn through, you control the heat input with your welders settings, a better power supply just makes a smoother arc and will probably increase your duty cycle. Go 220v, I suggest .023” ER70s-6 solid wire and a 92% argon/8% CO2 gas mix for best results on light gauge metal.
