What kind of welding glasses should I get?

I’m doing a chemistry program for the summer and the teacher said to bring a pair of welding glasses or goggles because we’ll be burning a lot of bright metals like magnesium. I was shopping around for some and I noticed that they have different shade numbers like 3,5,9 etc. I’m confused on which shade is appropriate for we’re doing. I’m pretty sure we’re not going to be staring at a burning metal for long periods of time if that makes a difference.

Magnesium will burn quickly so I would think that the # 5 would do (3 may be too light). But ask the people at the welding store for their recommendations. # 9 would be overkill, I would not go more than a # 6. Depending on what type of goggles you get the shaded lenses are fairly cheap you could buy a few and just change to the one that is most comfortable for you (unless you get the safety glass type). You may want to get some thin tig Welding Gloves to protect your hands also but that’s up to you. Good luck!
